From 1992, when Ms. Wendy Brower and her friends drew up the first “Green Map” of New York City, the concept of Green Map is becoming more and more popular all over the world. By now, “Green Map” groups have been established in more than 300 countries and regions, which have published 274 Green Maps.

Friends of Nature is the first NGO to be authorized to use the Green Map System Icons on mainland China. We intend to promote environmental education and cultural identification through the “Green Map” activity, which we believe will spread the idea of environment protection, energy-saving, and a green culture

Founded in 1994, Friends of Nature is the first environmental NGO in China. After a decade of development, members of Friends of Nature have always been dedicated to environmental education and natural conservation in the hope of setting up and spreading a green culture and advancing sustainable development in China.

The Green Map of Shichahai is the fruit of the hard work and wisdom of some dozens of volunteers of FON. We walked across countless streets and lanes and observed all the things by ourselves. From the winter of 2005 to the summer of 2006, it took us half a year to explore Shichahai. We have witnessed the icy arena with a hubbub of voices, the classic Siheyuan (courtyard house), the tranquil long lane, the dancing groups in the dusk, etc.

All the volunteers were collaboratively groping in darkness when starting on this adventure. We selected relevant materials, explored the sites, organized the information, edited and drafted. All this is for the intention of presenting the exact situation of this area and expressing our love for the beautiful scenic sites, our concern about the environment, and our hope for a better future. We believe that the world will be different due to our concerted efforts.
